Devil Ash Days Devil Ash Saga Book 1 edition by Mitchell Olson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
[book sample] Aura pivoted on his feet and patted her on the back as Shiva breezed by unharmed. "Ladies are not for hitting" he said. “They are for hitting on." Oh no he didn't! Ash thought, suppressing a grin and enjoying the spectacle.
"Whatever" Shiva replied, lunging back at him again.
Ok maybe I am a bit too cynical and somewhat out of touch with the [assumed] target audience. At first I could not help but feel that this was intended as a parody and the author would reveal this by having one of his (one-dimensional cardboard stereotypical) characters speak directly to the reader. However that never happened and the book just continues along the same lines.
In fact even the ending
He hadn't managed to escape from Hell, but at least he made some friends. For the time being, he'd just have to make due with being a devil. Aura cocked his head at Ash. "So Ash do you feel like a real devil now?" he asked. Ash smiled "Hell Yes!" he replied.
Seems to suggest that the author has as many limitations as any of the disappointing characters in the book. I can hope that with time, practice and guidance he develops his skills to at least become competent. Sorry a rating of two (2) out of five (5) is the best I can give.
There are many better offerings available I would suggest Joe The Vampire by Steven Luna for a more satisfying tale about a young male suddenly thrust into dealing with a new reality in the face of his identity and old way of existence being destroyed.
I was surprised when I first began reading this book, because I thought I could kind of guess where the author was going with the story. I was completely wrong.
Once we arrive in Hell, everything is up for grabs and nothing can be predicted. Ash is the kind of character where you really don't like him right away. I think it leaves a lot up to the reader to try to find a way to empathize with the crazy experience he's going through, and I appreciate the lack of hand holding.
All in all, I'm really looking forward to the next book. Hopefully it will have more bar scenes, as those were the parts that felt like you really got to know the main gang and they took on a life of their own.
A really nice new concept on heaven and hell not to mention very fun. Def worth reading and not at all boring
This book is heavily influenced by the Japanese tropes in Shonen manga. It's all there, the unassuming student who becomes a hero to fulfill his family obligations, the beautiful mother, the tsundere girl in charge, the irresponsible bishonen sidekick.... but the thing is, it's not an homage, it's a knockoff. It doesn't have any of the peculiar charm of a creative work produced for an audience with different expectations from our own that smooths over the vague unreality of its premise. It was produced by a Westerner, for Western audiences, and the unaddressed unreality hits you square between the eyes.
Its not awful, its just not at all good. Reread your kindle library before buying this one.
Lets face it, there is nothing earth shattering new in this book. You have probably read something similar before. Having said that, if you enjoyed those other books you're probably going to like this one too.
Interesting twist on hell and devils. Decent characters, looks like this series has some cool potential. Enjoyed the book, look forward to reading the next one. Worth getting.
It's pretty generic if you've ready any number of Japanese light novels.
This is pretty much a cheap american knock off of it.
